The Artificial Intelligence skill check.Five topics, one question each.
Question 1 is below exactly as the check asks it. The answer, and why it is right, come with your result.
Artificial intelligence is reshaping industries from healthcare to finance to education. Whether you're aiming for a research role, an applied AI position, or a product role involving AI, you need a solid grasp of how modern AI systems work.
This quick diagnostic covers five essential areas: how large language models process information, retrieval-augmented generation for grounding AI in real data, controlling model output through inference parameters, defending against prompt injection attacks, and using embeddings for semantic similarity.
Take 3 minutes to find out where you stand — free student account, instant results.
- LLM fundamentals
Understanding context windows is essential for designing effective AI applications.
- RAG
Retrieval-augmented generation is the standard pattern for production AI that needs factual grounding.
- Inference controls
Temperature and sampling parameters directly control output quality and reliability.
- AI safety
Prompt injection defence is a critical skill for anyone deploying AI in production.
- Embeddings
Embeddings power search, recommendations, and clustering across the AI industry.
What does a large language model do at each step as it writes a reply?
- ALooks the answer up in a database
- BPredicts the next token from the text so far
- CRuns a web search for every sentence
- DCopies a sentence from its training data
“Learn AI” means three things. This check tests one of them.
Despite the broad name, its five questions are on building with LLMs: context, retrieval, sampling, safety and embeddings. For model-training theory, take the Machine Learning check.
- 01
Machine learning foundations
How models learn from data: the statistics, training and evaluation underneath them.
For you ifyou want to train and judge models, as an ML engineer or data scientist.
Take the Machine Learning check - 02This check
Applied LLM engineering
Building software on models like Claude and GPT: prompts, retrieval, agents, evals and shipping.
For you ifyou write code and want to build AI features, not train models from scratch.
- 03
AI for your job
Using AI tools well in the work you already do: briefing them, checking what comes back, keeping data safe.
For you ifyou do not plan to code and want AI to make the work you do faster and better.

Pick a course
Any of the 21 courses in the AI Tutor, from Generative AI to AI for Teachers. Each check covers five topics.
- 02
Answer five questions
One question per topic, four options each. Nothing is marked until you finish.

Programmes that build on this check.Your result shows where to start.
Each one teaches Artificial Intelligence by building, and ends in deployed work graded against a rubric you can read.
Before you start.Three quick answers.
How is this different from the Generative AI check?
The questions overlap because modern AI is heavily driven by generative models. The full courses diverge: AI covers broader theory (classical ML, planning, search) while Generative AI focuses on LLM-specific engineering.
Do I need a maths background?
Not for this quick check. The questions test conceptual understanding, not mathematical derivations.
