Learning AI in New Zealand in 2026 costs anywhere from about NZ100 to NZ16,500, before you count a degree. The cheapest structured option is a government-approved micro-credential: Open Polytechnic's Introduction to Generative AI lists NZ104 for domestic students, and Whitecliffe's online micro-credentials list NZ200 to NZ250. University short courses and certificates of proficiency are NZ960 to NZ1,607. A twelve-to-twenty-four-week data science and AI bootcamp is NZ16,500 at the Institute of Data. A postgraduate certificate is about NZ5,800 and an online master's about NZ15,000 a year in domestic tuition. Every figure here is from the provider's own page, checked on 29 October 2026.

The price says little about the outcome. What each option buys is different: a credit on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework, a university's name, a cohort and a teacher, or time. The sections below go through each, then say which fits whom.

What does a micro-credential cost in New Zealand?

NZ100 to NZ500, for four to fifteen weeks of mostly self-paced online study, with credits on the NZQF. This is the band New Zealand does unusually well: NZQA-approved micro-credentials from polytechnics and private colleges, priced for domestic students far below their Australian equivalents.

They are good for a bounded skill and a line on a CV with NZQF credits behind it. Most teach concepts and tools rather than building and shipping something an employer can open, so they are a start rather than a career change. Fees are for domestic students; international fees are higher.

What do university short courses and certificates cost?

NZ960 to about NZ1,600 for a single course, and NZ$1,259 for a one-day workshop. The University of Auckland is the largest seller here, through its online arm:

  • Data Visualisation and Business Intelligence, a 15-point micro-credential over 9 weeks: NZ$960 incl. GST, domestic.
  • Cyber Forensics and Security, 9 weeks: NZ$960 incl. GST, domestic (2026).
  • Business Analytics, a certificate of proficiency over 10 weeks: NZ$1,453 incl. GST (2026), domestic.
  • Applied AI for Engineers (ENGGEN 720), 15 weeks live online: NZ$1,607 domestic incl. GST.
  • AI Essentials, a one-day in-person short course: NZ$1,259 incl. GST.

Victoria University of Wellington's professional arm runs one-day classroom courses in Wellington, such as Quantitative Data Analysis: Using AI and Human Judgement at NZ$995 excl. GST. What the fee buys is a university's name and its teaching; a certificate of proficiency is a university course you can later credit towards a qualification.

What does a data science and AI bootcamp cost?

The Institute of Data's Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Programme, run in New Zealand and with AUT, lists NZ16,500 (the page shows "16,500" without naming the currency) for 12 weeks full time or 24 weeks part time, remote or in person. It is the established bootcamp option in New Zealand, and its price is in line with the in-person bootcamps in Sydney and Melbourne: you are paying for instructors, a cohort and career support.

Queenstown Resort College's Machine Learning Fundamentals sits between a micro-credential and a bootcamp: NZ2,560 for the 10-week, 40-credit version and NZ3,840 for the 16-week, 60-credit one, domestic, taught in a classroom in Queenstown.

Online schools that teach live but grade work with an AI tutor charge a fraction of the established price. Square1 Ai is one: its twelve-week live bootcamps run on the Australian cohorts' timetable, weekday evenings from 8:30 PM New Zealand time, and its prices for New Zealand are in the questions below. It is not NZQA-registered, so Fees Free and StudyLink do not apply.

What does a university AI or data science qualification cost?

For a domestic student, the University of Auckland's online Postgraduate Certificate in Data Science (60 points, about a year part time) has a 2026 estimate of NZ5,772.60 incl. GST, and the University of Canterbury's online Master of Applied Data Science (180 points) estimates NZ14,963 in domestic tuition for 2026. A full master's at a New Zealand university is cheaper for a domestic student than its Australian equivalent, and StudyLink loans can cover tuition.

For the roles that require a degree, and for anyone who wants the statistics and the theory done properly, nothing else substitutes. For an engineering role decided on what you can build, it is the slowest route.

What do the certification exams cost from New Zealand?

None of the large vendors shows New Zealand a price in New Zealand dollars. On their own pages on 29 October 2026, AWS charges US100 for AI Practitioner and Cloud Practitioner and US150 for Solutions Architect Associate; Microsoft US84 for AZ-900 and AI-901 and US140 for AZ-104; CompTIA US439 for Security+ and US399 for Network+; Cisco US300 for the CCNA. At the 15 October 2026 rate the site uses, US100 is about NZ$180. Each exam has its own New Zealand page under exam prep, with the fee, how to sit it online and the local prep courses, and the practice questions are free.

The cost that is not on the price list

Time. A twelve-week course at fifteen hours a week is 180 hours, and a self-paced micro-credential you finish in six months is about the same. What decides the result is whether you finish, and whether you have something to show at the end: a deployed project an employer can run beats a certificate in most technical interviews. What AI and tech jobs pay in Australia and New Zealand has Payscale's salary figures for the roles these courses lead to; a New Zealand software engineer's median base salary is NZ$84,600.

The short answer, by situation

  • Curious, or need one skill for your current job: a micro-credential at NZ100 to NZ500, or a university short course around NZ$1,000.
  • Want a university name on a short course: the University of Auckland's online micro-credentials and certificates, NZ960 to NZ1,607.
  • Changing career and want a teacher and a cohort: a bootcamp. NZ$16,500 at the Institute of Data, or an online live bootcamp for far less.
  • Need the degree: a postgraduate certificate at about NZ5,800, or a master's at about NZ15,000 a year domestic.
