Concretely, valued technical skills include: building evaluations that probe for harmful behaviour, bias, hallucination and instruction-following failures; running bias audits with disaggregated metrics and an understanding of why fairness definitions conflict; red teaming and adversarial testing; and enough data analysis to reason about uncertainty rather than quoting a single number as if it were exact. Understand how models are trained and where they break, and prove it with projects: an evaluation suite that probes a model for a specific failure, a bias audit of a public dataset written up honestly with its limitations, a small red-teaming exercise documented like a security disclosure. A portfolio of real analyses beats a list of course titles, because it shows judgement, not just recall.
Develop governance and ethics literacy. Follow the regulatory conversation, read real cases of AI harm and how organisations responded, and practise structured ethical reasoning on concrete scenarios rather than abstractions. Being able to connect a regulatory clause to a technical control is a rare and hireable combination.
Cultivate the bridge. The scarcest people are those fluent in both dialects. If you come from engineering, deliberately learn the policy and ethics side; if you come from law or policy, learn enough of how models work to call nonsense when you hear it. That crossover is where the interesting responsible-AI careers are.
