IT services and BPO

AI is changing what Sri Lankan IT and BPO firms sell.

When AI cuts the hours a piece of work takes, the work, the estimate and the contract all change. The training starts with the roles that feel it first.

Software engineers

Designing and reviewing, not only writing code

Colombo-founded WSO2 launched Devant in March 2025, an AI platform that builds integrations and AI agents with low-code and pro-code tools. Engineers spend more of the week on design, review and testing of what the tools produce.

Delivery and engagement managers

Estimating work that AI shortens

In August 2026 the Deputy Minister of Digital Economy asked the industry what happens to firms that sell hours when AI removes a third of them. Managers learn what AI can and cannot do before they scope and quote the work.

Product support engineers

Supporting AI features in client systems

IFS runs 80% of its worldwide product support from Sri Lanka and ships AI features in its product. Support teams need to diagnose problems in AI features, and to use AI to diagnose faster.

BPO and contact-centre agents

Moving from routine work to judgement

World Bank findings, reported by ACCA in December 2025, put Sri Lanka’s workforce at high exposure to AI-driven change, with routine digital work expected to shrink. Agents learn to work with AI assistance and take the cases that need a person.

Your clients’ data, and the new data law

There is no sector regulator for IT and BPO, but the work you do for clients now meets Sri Lanka’s data law, and every client contract has its own AI terms.

  • The Personal Data Protection Act No. 9 of 2022: its rules for controllers and processors take effect on 1 January 2027
  • Each client’s own AI and data terms decide which tools your teams may use on that client’s work
  • Exercises run on your own delivery work, inside the tools and accounts your contracts allow

Your options

Four ways Sri Lankan companies train a team in AI.

Each one fits a different need. Most companies end up mixing two.

  1. Route 1

Open courses at a university or institute

Fits when a few people need a certificate from a name your sector knows, such as SLIIT or the University of Moratuwa.

Watch for weekend schedules, one person at a time, and courses built for individuals rather than your team’s work.

  2. Route 2

A corporate trainer for a day

Fits when you want one hands-on workshop, online or on site in Colombo.

Watch for what happens after the day: most workshops leave no graded record of who can now do what.

  3. Route 3

Vendor courses for the tools you already use

Fits when your company is standardising on Microsoft 365 Copilot, Google Gemini or AWS and wants people trained on that tool.

Watch for a vendor course teaches the tool, not your workflow; non-technical teams usually need both.

  4. Route 4

A team trained and measured together (Square1 Ai)

Fits when you want every person placed by a test, taught live, graded on real work and measured again at week 12.

Watch for it takes a few hours a week from each person, and the results depend on them doing the work.

Questions

AI training for IT and BPO companies in Sri Lanka: your questions.

How much does AI training cost for an IT or BPO team in Sri Lanka?

Live online courses are LKR 22,500 a person for a team of five or more, and in-person training is LKR 150,000 a day for up to 20 people. A four-week Sprint that builds one AI workflow with your team is LKR 750,000, and twelve weeks of Train + build is LKR 2,250,000. One published price for every company, plus tax where it applies.

Which teams should train first?

The ones whose hours AI changes first: engineers and QA, the delivery managers who price the work, product support, and contact-centre agents. The readiness test places each person, so an engineer and a team leader do not sit the same course.

Can you train engineers and non-technical staff in the same company?

Yes. Engineers take the build courses, such as AI agents and integration, and everyone else takes AI at work and no-code automation. Both are live online with an instructor, graded by Nova, at LKR 22,500 a person.

Does the data protection law apply to work we do for clients?

The Act’s Part III, on controllers and processors, takes effect on 1 January 2027. Whether it covers a given client contract is a question for your counsel. The training covers how AI tools handle personal data, so your teams can follow whatever applies.

Can you train our staff in our offices?

In-person training in Sri Lanka is LKR 150,000 a day for up to 20 people, with no travel added, as one day or a series of days. Live online sessions run on Sri Lanka time, which never changes its clocks.

What does a Sprint build for an IT or BPO firm?

One workflow your team picks, built with your people inside your own accounts over four weeks: for example triaging support tickets, drafting test cases from requirements, or scoring call quality against your own checklist. It ends with a pilot and a 30-question test, and the fee of LKR 750,000 counts toward Train + build if you continue within 30 days.

Why train an IT or BPO team in AI now?

Because clients are asking what AI does to the price. The government’s 2030 roadmap targets US$5 bn in digital exports, and in August 2026 the Deputy Minister of Digital Economy warned that AI is reshaping the export model. A team that already works with AI can answer the client.
