Trades and construction

Where AI is already changing trade and building work in New Zealand.

The training starts with the roles AI touches first, inside the rules New Zealand trades and construction businesses already work under.

Estimator

Faster quotes from plans

AI tools help read plans, list materials and draft quotes and variation notices. The estimator still owns the numbers: a quote that misstates price or scope can breach the Fair Trading Act.

Owner / sales

Website, ads and job descriptions

Small trade firms use chat assistants for website copy, social posts and replies to leads. Claims about price, quality or features must be true and not misleading in overall impression.

Project manager

Site reports and client updates

Voice notes and photos from site are turned into daily reports and client updates with AI. The PM has to check facts and keep clients' personal details out of tools that retain data.

Office manager

Admin, invoicing and compliance paperwork

AI drafts invoices chasers, safety-plan templates and supplier emails. Templates still need a competent person's review before they are relied on.

The rules your training has to respect

No AI-specific rules for trades: the Fair Trading Act and Consumer Guarantees Act (quotes, ads, workmanship) and the Privacy Act 2020 decide how firms can use AI.

  • Fair Trading Act 1986 (Commerce Commission): no false or misleading representations about price, quality, features or discounts, judged on overall impression — applies to AI-written quotes, ads and websites
  • Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 (Commerce Commission): services to consumers must meet minimum guarantees whatever tools were used to plan or quote them
  • Privacy Commissioner's generative AI expectations (25 May 2023): no customer personal information into tools that retain or disclose it; human review of outputs

Your options

Four ways New Zealand companies train a team in AI.

Each one fits a different need. Leaders and the wider team often take different routes.

  1. Route 1

A university or IoD short course

Fits when a leader or director wants a day in a room at the University of Auckland or the Institute of Directors.

Watch for NZ$1,259 a person at Auckland and NZ$1,375 at the IoD for non-members, one person at a time, on their dates.

  2. Route 2

    An NZQA micro-credential

Fits when you want a credential on the NZQA framework, for example Open Polytechnic's Level 5 AI micro-credential.

Watch for self-paced study over ten weeks rarely changes how a team works day to day.

  3. Route 3

Vendor courses for the tools you already use

Fits when your company is standardising on Microsoft 365 Copilot, Google Gemini or AWS and wants people trained on that tool.

Watch for a vendor course teaches the tool, not your workflow; non-technical teams usually need both.

  4. Route 4

A team trained and measured together (Square1 Ai)

Fits when you want every person placed by a test, taught live, graded on real work and measured again at week 12.

Watch for it takes a few hours a week from each person, and the results depend on them doing the work.

Questions

AI training for trade businesses in New Zealand: your questions.

How much does aI training for trade businesses cost in New Zealand?

Live online courses are NZ$185 a person for a team of five or more, booked in your working hours. A four-week Sprint that builds one AI workflow with your team is NZ$6,200, and twelve weeks of Train + build is NZ$18,500. One published price for every business, plus GST where it applies.

My team is mostly on site — how does live online training work for us?

Sessions run live on Zoom, booked in your working hours, and can be joined from a phone; most trade examples, such as quotes and site reports, work from one. In-person days in New Zealand are on request.

Can AI write our health and safety documents?

It can draft them, but you remain the duty holder under health and safety law, so a competent person must check them against your actual site risks before use.

Which staff should start first?

Usually the people AI already touches: estimator, owner / sales and project manager. A two-minute readiness test places every person, so nobody sits a course pitched at someone else's job.

What does a Sprint build for a trade business?

One workflow your team picks, built with your people inside your own accounts over four weeks: for example quotes drafted from site notes and photos with every line checked, a follow-up workflow for unanswered enquiries, or job sheets turned into invoices. It ends with a pilot and a 30-question test, and the fee of NZ$6,200 counts toward Train + build if you continue within 30 days.

Is this NZQA-recognised training?

No. Square1 Ai is not an NZQA-registered provider, so its courses do not lead to an NZQA qualification or credits. Each person keeps a graded record of their work. If your team needs NZQA credits, choose a registered provider.
