Questions people in Sri Lanka ask about forward deployed engineering
What is a forward deployed engineer?
An engineer who works inside a customer's organisation to get an AI or software product running for them: finding the problem, building the integration, deploying it and handing it over. The title spread from Palantir to AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
Is there a forward deployed engineer course in Sri Lanka?
No Sri Lankan institute runs a forward deployed engineering course yet; the options are online, from K21 Academy, Poridhi and others, listed in the table above. Square1 Ai's Forward Deployed Engineer bootcamp is taught live on Sri Lanka time, twelve weeks, from LKR 30,000.
What does a forward deployed engineer earn in Sri Lanka?
There is no published salary survey for the title in Sri Lanka yet. The nearest roles in Colombo: a software engineer's median base pay is LKR 123,750 a month and an AI engineer's LKR 109,982 (Glassdoor, September 2026). Many forward deployed roles are with overseas companies hiring remotely, and pay follows the employer's market.
How is it different from a software engineer?
A software engineer mostly builds the product. A forward deployed engineer builds with the customer: half the job is listening, scoping and explaining, and the code has to run in someone else's systems.
Do I need to be a software engineer first?
It helps. The bootcamp expects you to have written and run code; each project is a real deployment, so the Software Engineering with AI or Claude Code bootcamp is the better start if you are new.
Can I learn forward deployed engineering online in Sri Lanka while working full time?
Yes. The live sessions start at 5:30 PM Sri Lanka time on weekdays, after most office hours, with full-day sessions at weekends, and the work between sessions is graded by Nova, Square1 Ai's AI tutor, whenever you submit it. Plan for about fifteen hours a week across the twelve weeks.
Does the bootcamp guarantee a job?
No. No placement rate is published because the first cohorts have not graduated. You leave with 10 projects, a recorded defence of your work an employer can watch, and a hiring plan worked through with your instructor.
How do I pay from Sri Lanka?
