Your options

Four ways to become a forward deployed engineer

Most forward deployed engineers move in from a nearby role. The right route depends on where you are starting.

  1. Route 1

    From software engineering

Fits when You already ship code and want to work face to face with customers.

Watch for The gap is usually discovery, scoping and handover, not code; practise those on real stakeholders.

  2. Route 2

    From solutions or sales engineering

Fits when You already run demos and proofs of concept and want to build the real thing.

Watch for You will need to write and deploy production code, not only prototypes.

  3. Route 3

    A free or self-paced course

Fits when You want the ideas before committing.

Watch for The job is learned with real stakeholders; ask whether anyone reviews a real deployment.

  4. Route 4

    A live online bootcamp

Fits when You are working and want to practise the whole job, from stakeholder interview to handover, taught live on Sydney evenings.

Watch for Square1 Ai's bootcamps are new and not accredited: the first cohorts have not graduated, so there is no placement rate yet.

Questions

Questions people in Australia ask about forward deployed engineering

What is a forward deployed engineer?

An engineer who works inside a customer's organisation to get an AI or software product running for them: finding the problem, building the integration, deploying it and handing it over. The title spread from Palantir to AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

Is there a forward deployed engineer course in Australia?

No Australian university or TAFE course for it showed up in a Google search in October 2026. Claude Training School Australia publishes a free, self-paced 12-week course, and Supervity runs a 12-week trainee program that pays a stipend; the table above lists each one's length and fee. Square1 Ai's twelve-week Forward Deployed Engineer bootcamp is taught live on weekday evenings from 6:30 PM Sydney time and weekend days, for A$200.

What does a forward deployed engineer earn in Australia?

Glassdoor puts the median base salary for a forward deployed engineer in Australia at A$103,500 a year, with the middle half between A$86,150 and A$142,000, from 28 reported salaries. A solutions architect's median is A$166,000.

How is it different from a software engineer?

A software engineer mostly builds the product. A forward deployed engineer builds with the customer: half the job is listening, scoping and explaining, and the code has to run in someone else's systems.

Do I need to be a software engineer first?

It helps. The bootcamp expects you to have written and run code; each project is a real deployment, so the Software Engineering with AI or Claude Code bootcamp is the better start if you are new.

Can I learn forward deployed engineering online in Australia while working full time?

Yes. Australian cohorts meet on weekday evenings from 6:30 PM Sydney and Melbourne time, with full-day sessions at weekends, and the work between sessions is graded by Nova, Square1 Ai's AI tutor, whenever you submit it. Plan for about fifteen hours a week across the twelve weeks.

Is it a nationally recognised qualification, and can I use government funding?

No. Square1 Ai is not a registered training organisation, so its bootcamps are not nationally recognised qualifications and are not eligible for government funding, fee-free TAFE places or VET Student Loans. You get 10 deployed projects and a recorded defence of your work, not a certificate under the AQF.

Does the bootcamp guarantee a job?

No. No placement rate is published because the first cohorts have not graduated. You leave with 10 projects an employer can open and run, a recorded defence of your work, and a hiring plan worked through with your instructor.

How do I pay?

Reserving a seat is free and takes your name, email and country. Nothing is charged until the start date is confirmed and you say yes.
