Law firms and conveyancers

Where AI is already changing legal work in Australia.

The training starts with the roles AI touches first, inside the rules Australian small law firms already work under.

Litigation solicitor

Drafting submissions and checking citations

In NSW courts generative AI may be used to prepare written submissions, but the author must verify in the document that every citation exists, is accurate and is relevant, and that check cannot be done only with an AI tool. The solicitor has to know how to verify authorities by hand and where AI is banned outright.

Paralegal

Chronologies, indexes and document summaries

Practice Note SC Gen 23 expressly allows AI to build chronologies, indexes and witness lists and to summarise documents and transcripts. The paralegal must know that subpoenaed material and anything under a suppression order cannot go into an AI tool unless the platform keeps it private and does not train on it.

Principal

Supervising AI use across the practice

The Law Society of NSW, the WA Legal Practice Board and the Victorian Legal Services Board issued a joint statement telling lawyers to keep client confidentiality, use AI for lower-risk tasks and be open with clients and courts. The principal needs a written AI policy and a sign-off step so every AI-assisted document is checked by a lawyer.

Conveyancer

Reviewing contracts and drafting client updates

Conveyancing teams use AI assistants to summarise contracts for sale and draft client update emails. They need to know the OAIC's advice is not to enter personal information into public AI tools, so buyer and seller details stay out of free chatbots.

The rules your training has to respect

Court practice notes now set hard limits on AI in litigation, and the professional duties of confidentiality, competence and fair costs apply to every AI-assisted task, as the NSW, WA and Victorian regulators have said.

  • Supreme Court of NSW Practice Note SC Gen 23 (commenced 3 Feb 2025): AI must not generate the content of affidavits, witness statements or character references (para 10); expert reports need prior leave (para 20); citations in AI-assisted submissions must be verified, and not solely by AI (paras 16-17); suppressed or subpoenaed material must not be entered into AI unless the platform is private and does not train on it (para 9A)
  • Joint statement on AI by the Law Society of NSW, Legal Practice Board of WA and Victorian Legal Services Board and Commissioner: lawyers must maintain client confidentiality, act competently and diligently, give independent advice and charge fair, reasonable and proportionate costs when using AI, and should limit AI to lower-risk tasks
  • OAIC, Guidance on privacy and the use of commercially available AI products (21 Oct 2024, updated 17 Jan 2025): best practice is not to enter personal information into publicly available generative AI tools; entering it is a use or disclosure under APP 6, and APP 10 accuracy duties apply to AI outputs

Your options

Four ways Australian companies train a team in AI.

Each one fits a different need. Leaders and the wider team often take different routes.

  1. Route 1

    A business-school short course

Fits when a leader wants two days at Melbourne Business School or UNSW AGSM and a name on the certificate.

Watch for A$3,500 a person at MBS and up to A$3,950 at AGSM, one leader at a time, on the school’s dates.

  2. Route 2

Nationally recognised training from an RTO

Fits when you need an accredited unit or a funded place, for example a TAFE NSW microskill.

Watch for short self-paced modules rarely change how a team works day to day.

  3. Route 3

Vendor courses for the tools you already use

Fits when your company is standardising on Microsoft 365 Copilot, Google Gemini or AWS and wants people trained on that tool.

Watch for a vendor course teaches the tool, not your workflow; non-technical teams usually need both.

  4. Route 4

A team trained and measured together (Square1 Ai)

Fits when you want every person placed by a test, taught live, graded on real work and measured again at week 12.

Watch for it takes a few hours a week from each person, and the results depend on them doing the work.

Questions

AI training for law firms in Australia: your questions.

How much does aI training for law firms cost in Australia?

Live online courses are A$149 a person for a team of five or more, booked in your working hours. A four-week Sprint that builds one AI workflow with your team is A$4,990, and twelve weeks of Train + build is A$14,900. One published price for every business, plus GST where it applies.

Can we use AI to draft a client's affidavit in NSW?

No. Practice Note SC Gen 23 says AI must not be used to generate the content of affidavits, witness statements or character references, and the document must state that AI was not used. You can still use it for preparatory work such as a chronology.

Do we have to tell clients we use AI?

The NSW, WA and Victorian regulators' joint statement asks lawyers to be transparent with clients and courts where required, and costs must stay fair, reasonable and proportionate. Say how you use AI in your engagement letter and costs disclosure.

Which staff should start first?

Usually the people AI already touches: litigation solicitor, paralegal and principal. A two-minute readiness test places every person, so nobody sits a course pitched at someone else's job.

What does a Sprint build for a law firm?

One workflow your team picks, built with your people inside your own accounts over four weeks: for example a first-draft chronology from a document bundle that a lawyer checks, a contract-summary template, or client update emails drafted from matter notes. It ends with a pilot and a 30-question test, and the fee of A$4,990 counts toward Train + build if you continue within 30 days.

Is this nationally recognised training?

No. Square1 Ai is not a registered training organisation (RTO), so its courses do not lead to a nationally recognised qualification and are not eligible for VET funding. Each person keeps a graded record of their work. If your team needs an accredited unit, choose an RTO such as TAFE.
